Privacy Policy

August 22, 2026

Disaster Science Pty Ltd (hereinafter ‘Disaster Science’) is a company incorporated within Australia and we are therefore subject to Australian laws.

We are a ‘small business operator’ within the meaning of the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). Even where the Act’s requirements do not strictly apply to us, we align our privacy practices with the Australian Privacy Principles. We take our responsibility relating to privacy seriously and have set forth our Privacy Policy below.

Should you have any inquiries or complaints regarding how we deal with personal information and/or privacy, please contact us at [email protected].

Collection of your personal information

We are committed to provide you with the best experience when using our product and services. There are many aspects of our service that can be accessed without providing personal information. However, we do passively collect certain information for technical, statistical, network protection and usage monitoring purposes, including:

  • user demographics, IP addresses, date and time accessed, pages accessed, operating system used, web browser type, version and language, page access times, referring website addresses, device and application diagnostics, and error and crash reports (which may include how the app appeared on your screen around the time of an error).

We collect this information for service delivery, security, network protection, abuse prevention and product improvement. It is used by us, and by service providers acting on our behalf; we do not sell personal information and we do not use third-party advertising networks. For enterprise accounts, third-party error diagnostics are disabled.

For more advanced services, we may also collect information directly from individuals, through an opt-in process, which includes:

  • names, email addresses, mobile numbers, organisation details, and the locations you choose to receive alerts about.

Many of these services involve a provider you choose as part of opting in: push notifications are delivered through Google and Apple’s notification services, sign-in uses the identity provider you select (such as Google, Apple, Microsoft or Facebook), SMS alerts are delivered by telecommunications carriers, and paid subscriptions are billed by our payment provider or the app store you purchase through. Further information on how we intend to use or disclose this information will be available to the individual to whom the personal information relates, depending on the service provided.

Use and disclosure of your personal information

We will use and disclose personal information for the primary purpose for which it was collected. There may be other circumstances where we disclose personal information, including with the permission of the person to whom the information relates, or for a secondary purpose that would also be permitted under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

We use a small number of specialist service providers to operate the platform, covering functions such as content delivery and security, error diagnostics, push notification delivery, mapping and search, SMS delivery, and payment processing. Each receives only the information needed to perform its function on our behalf. Some of these providers are located overseas, primarily in the United States; SMS alerts are delivered through Australian carriers by default. Information handled on our own systems is used for internal service delivery only. Disaster Science takes reasonable steps to ensure that these organisations are bound by confidentiality and privacy obligations in relation to the protection of your personal information.

We provide our services globally, and serving users well means locating infrastructure close to them. Our services are therefore hosted on infrastructure we control in Australia and Canada. Requests are served from the location nearest you: users in Australia are served from Australian data centres, while users in other regions are typically served from our Canadian data centres. To provide a responsive service worldwide, our core data store is replicated between these locations, and records generated by your use of the service, such as access logs, are generally created in the region that served your request.

Changes to this Privacy Policy

We reserve the right to make amendments to this Privacy Policy at any time.

If our information practices change, information collected after the change will be handled under the updated practices; information collected earlier will continue to be used only for the purposes for which it was collected. If you have objections to the Privacy Policy, you should not access or continue using our services.
